Hmm, one reason why someone doesn't know what they want, can be the lack of experience in that field. So probably he/she should explore in different directions to figure out what he/she doesn't like. That's a good start to discovering want he/she truely want :)
So what, cover everything so you know everything? I'm almost sure if one wants something they should also like the idea of having it, but if they don't feel anything like that, basically if they don't count on like/dislike to chose their targets, what then? :)
